Have you ever wanted to add a beautiful dark houseplant to your collection? Here is a quick guide of some of the stunning options to bring a little goth spirit into your home.

Don’t forget to choose an appropriate pot! Dark, rich colors will bring in more of that gothic vibe but you can also choose a light or bright contrasting color like a pale blue to highlight the dark colors of the plant itself instead. Or, if you prefer a more monotone color scheme and still want a dark pot, use decorative white rocks to highlight the deep hues of the leaves. Midnight Begonia

Also known as the Spirit of Zanzibar or the Black Mamba, this beautiful plant has jagged black leaves with a red underside and green accents. It is a Rex-type begonia that is easy to care for: it likes to be on the drier side and should be kept out of the direct afternoon sun or it might get burnt.

Medallion Rose Painted Calathea

This house plant has large, rounded leaves with an internal ring of light green and stunning purple underside. It doesn’t require any special care compared to other calatheas, but it should be kept away from bright direct sunlight and any air vents, door, or windows that might produce a draft. It likes to be watered more frequently (though be careful not to overwater).

Bat Flower

The tallest and perhaps most unique of all the plants on this list, the Bat Flower (or Devil Flower) is a tropical marvel. Closely related to yams, of all things, it features a base of beautiful green leaves and blooms into a tall, almost alien looking flower with long white whiskers. As a tropical plant it likes high humidity and consistently moist, well-draining soil.

Black Velvet Alocasia

Contrary to the ‘black’ in its name, the Black Velvet Alocasia is actually a very deep green. Its water-drop shaped leaves are contrasted beautifully with light, almost white, veining throughout. It likes bright, indirect light and does need regular watering (every 1-2 weeks). It prefers slightly more humid surroundings so use a pebble tray to give it extra moisture.

Black Cardinal Philodendron

This stunning dark color philodendron has beautiful, large warm black leaves. It likes bright indirect light and prefers a thorough watering in well-draining soil infrequently. The Black Cardinal thrives in a more humid environment, though it will do fine in most household air, but if it looks or feels dried out using a pebble tray or humidifier will help.

Raven ZZ

ZZ plants are one of the easiest house plants to care for and the Raven ZZ comes in a gorgeous gothic black. New leaves start in a light green color but will darken as they mature. ZZ plants can survive in almost any light environment, but will thrive in bright indirect light and can burn in direct sunlight. They prefer watering every 2 to 3 weeks, once the top inch or so has dried out, and it’s better to err on the side of less water as ZZs are remarkably drought-tolerant. They also prefer a chunkier soil so be sure to add perlite or pumice.

Tim Anderson Anthurium

This Anthurium has beautiful, heart-shaped black leaves with incredible white veining throughout that can grow to a large size. They, like the others in this list, like bright indirect sunlight but should be kept out of direct sunlight as they can be a bit sensitive. They prefer a coarse, airy soil mixture with orchid bark or perlite and regular, thorough watering. These plants like high humidity, warmer temperatures, and moving airflow, though you’ll want to avoid the harsher drafts from AC units or heaters.
