Moana Made Potting Soil is closely connected to the way we grow our own plants. At our local farm in Minden, NV., Moana Grown plants are cultivated with care before making their way to our garden centers and, ultimately, into landscapes, containers, patios, and homes throughout our community.

The potting soil surrounding their roots plays an important role throughout that journey. A dependable growing medium must provide enough moisture to support the plant without becoming overly dense or waterlogged. It also needs to maintain air space (not pockets) around the roots, resist compaction, and provide a stable environment as the plant develops.

Moana Made All Purpose Potting Soil was blended with those needs in mind.

By using the same soil at home that we use to grow Moana Grown plants at our farm, gardeners can provide a familiar growing environment as their plants settle into a new container or planting space. Four Ingredients, One Balanced Blend

The performance of a potting soil depends on how its ingredients work together. Moana Made combines four carefully selected components in purposeful proportions:

• 35% sphagnum peat moss
• 35% bark fines
• 20% pumice stone
• 10% BOOST® Full Circle Compost

Each ingredient contributes something different to the blend. Together, they help create the balance of moisture retention, drainage, aeration, structure, and nutrient support that healthy roots need.

Sphagnum Peat Moss for Moisture Retention

Sphagnum peat moss makes up 35% of the Moana Made blend. Its primary role is to help the soil retain moisture and support consistent root hydration.

Container plants depend on the soil around their roots to hold enough water between irrigations. If a potting mix drains too quickly without retaining sufficient moisture, plants may dry out faster than expected. Peat moss helps hold moisture within the blend so that it remains available to the roots.

This moisture-holding capacity is especially valuable in containers, where plants have access only to the limited amount of soil inside the pot. At the same time, peat moss is balanced by the bark fines and pumice, helping the finished blend retain moisture while still allowing drainage and airflow.

Bark Fines for Structure and Stability

Another 35% of Moana Made consists of bark fines. These finely sized pieces of bark help improve the physical structure of the soil and contribute to its long-term stability.

Good soil structure is important because roots need room to grow. When soil becomes overly compacted, water and air may have difficulty moving through it. Bark fines help maintain texture and pore space within the blend, creating a more open environment around plant roots.

Pumice Stone for Drainage and Aeration

Pumice stone accounts for 20% of the Moana Made blend. This lightweight, porous material helps increase aeration and drainage while reducing compaction.

Although roots need water, they also need oxygen. A soil blend that stays too dense or saturated can limit the air available within the root zone. Pumice creates small spaces throughout the mix, helping air and water move more freely.

Its porous structure helps the soil resist settling into a heavy mass over time. This makes pumice especially useful in container planting, where repeated watering can gradually compress a lower-quality potting mix.

When choosing a container, make sure it provides adequate room (but not too much!)  for the plant and has drainage holes that allow excess water to escape. Add Moana Made Potting Soil, position the plant at an appropriate depth, and gently fill around the root ball.

After planting, water thoroughly. This helps settle the soil around the roots, removes large air pockets, and provides the plant with its first complete watering in its new home. Check the plant regularly afterward and adjust watering according to its individual needs, the size and type of container, and current weather conditions.

Because different plants have different requirements, gardeners should also consider the amount of sunlight, mature plant size, temperature, and watering preferences when selecting a planting location.
