A Second Life for the Holiday Plants: Poinsettia Recycling Program
When the holidays wrap up, there’s a familiar question many of us face: What do I do with my poinsettia now?
For weeks, these vibrant plants are the stars of our homes, bright reds, creamy whites, pinks, marbles, and everything in between. But once the decorations come down and daily life settles back in, poinsettias often lose their color and no longer feel like a good fit for year-round décor. Not everyone wants to keep them through months of green leaves and careful care, and honestly, we get it.
At the same time, there’s something that just doesn’t feel right about throwing a living plant into the trash.
That’s why Moana Nursery is excited to introduce a new solution that’s easy, eco-friendly, and community-minded: Poinsettia Recycling, in partnership with Full Circle Compost.
The Post-Holiday Poinsettia Problem
Every year, thousands of poinsettias end up in landfills once the holidays are over. They’re still alive, still organic, and still full of potential, but without a clear next step, many people aren’t sure what else to do. Composting at home isn’t always an option, and curbside green waste, if available, can be expensive or unfeasible for most.
We saw an opportunity to make it simpler, and more sustainable, for everyone.
How Poinsettia Recycling Works
The process is easy and inclusive:
- Bring your poinsettia to Moana Nursery when you’re done with it
- Any color, any size, any condition, healthy, leggy, or past its prime
- Purchased from anywhere (it doesn’t have to be from us)
Our team will take care of the prep and ensure the plant is properly handled for composting. From there, we send the plant material to Full Circle Compost, where it is transformed into nutrient-rich compost.
That compost is then returned to the community, supporting healthier soils, stronger plants, and a more circular local system. In other words, your poinsettia gets a second life, helping grow something new.
Turning Waste into a Resource
This partnership is about more than just one plant. It’s about reducing waste, honoring the life of the things we grow, and finding practical ways to be more resourceful together. By composting poinsettias instead of sending them to the landfill, we’re keeping organic material in the soil where it belongs and giving it a meaningful purpose long after the holidays have passed.
A Thank You for Doing the Right Thing
To say thanks for being eco-conscious, everyone who brings in a poinsettia for recycling will receive a coupon for 25% off one regular-priced item at Moana Nursery.
- Valid through February 28, 2026
- A little reward for doing something good for the planet 🌱
- You will receive 1 coupon per household, per visit, not per plant.
Growing a More Sustainable Community
We know the holidays are busy, and once they’re over, it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed by what comes next, decorations, cleanup, and plants included. This program is our way of saying: You’re not alone, and there’s a better option.
Thank you for helping us recycle, reduce waste, and grow a more thoughtful, sustainable community, one poinsettia at a time.

Few plants capture the holiday spirit as beautifully as holly. With its glossy green leaves and bright red berries, holly evokes centuries of festive tradition, symbolizing hope, renewal, and resilience through winter.
Annuals grow fast and bloom hard. That kind of performance takes fuel, and fertilizer is their go-to energy source.
With its graceful shape, aromatic wood, and vital ecological role, the Incense Cedar is more than just an attractive tree—it’s a fantastic addition to any garden in the high desert.
The Sun Valley Red Maple is not just another tree—it's a resilient, seasonal beauty that thrives in the high desert, offering you years of color and grace in your landscape.
