Firefly Petunias at Moana Nursery: A New and Exciting Experiment Coming soon!
We’re thrilled to introduce a new and exciting product coming Spring 2025 to Moana Nursery: Firefly Petunias! These striking plants are renowned for their unique glowing appearance. Developed through innovative breeding, Firefly petunias are a truly captivating addition to any garden. But because this is the first time we’re testing them in our climate, we want to share what we know, what we’re still learning, and what you can expect as you join us on this experimental journey.
The Science Behind Firefly Petunias
Firefly petunias from Light Bio are the result of years of specialized breeding to create a plant with a natural glow. Thanks to bioluminescence, these flowers appear to glow at night, adding a magical touch to your garden. This unique glowing effect is still being studied for its full potential, but it is one of the key features that sets Firefly petunias apart from traditional varieties. Not only do they glow, but Firefly petunias are also bred with improved disease resistance and a longer bloom period compared to many classic petunias. Best of all, they’re safe for pollinators, attracting bees and other beneficial insects to your garden. These are the world’s first-ever bioluminescent annuals and were named one of the best inventions of 2024 by Time Magazine.
Care Tips for Firefly Petunias in the High Desert
Living in the high desert comes with unique challenges, and Firefly petunias are no exception. The intense sun, fluctuating temperatures, and dry air can be tough on plants. However, with a little extra care, they can thrive in our region. Firefly petunias thrive in full sun, so choosing a sunny spot in your garden is key, but the high desert sunlight can be harsh, so we recommend some afternoon shade. They prefer well-draining soil and need to be watered regularly. However, it’s important not to overwater, as they are susceptible to root rot in soggy soil.
🌞 Sunlight: Firefly petunias call for full sun, but be considerate of the harsh afternoon sun in the high desert, some afternoon shade may be preferred.
💧 Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply whenever the top inch of soil feels dry.
🌱Fertilizing: Use a balanced fertilizer, like fertilome blooming & rooting, 2-3 times per week during the growing season to promote continuous blooming.
✂ Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage new blooms.
🤎 Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch or soil building conditioner around the base of the plants to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weed growth.

Realistic Expectations
As with any new product, we want to be transparent about what you can expect. Firefly petunias are a brand-new addition to Moana Nursery, while we’re excited about their potential, it’s important to keep in mind that there are still a lot of unknowns. Firefly petunias are said to glow best in complete darkness, so any ambient light from your yard, your neighbors, or even the moon, may affect the glow that you see.
Given that Firefly petunias are a cutting-edge product, they come with a higher price tag. The cost reflects the unique breeding process, limited availability, and the science behind their bioluminescence. We understand that it’s an investment, but we believe the unique beauty and novelty of these petunias are well worth it.
