TIMELY TIPS
A primary cause of so many stressed and dead trees is the typically droughty periods we experience during winter months. Last year was a welcome exception, but even in a year with relatively abundant moisture, we usually need to winter water. Without it trees and shrubs become stressed and susceptible to disease and insects and then they die.

Plants in the ground, especially newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials, need the equivalent of one inch of precipitation per month. Plants in containers need more since they dry out faster. If natural precipitation does not arrive, this will be necessary throughout the winter for ALL plants. Visit this helpful link on high desert winter watering to read our fact sheet titled IF-14 Winter Watering.

  • Continue to plant trees & shrubs with G&B Organics Starter Fertilizer & SUPERthrive; then apply 2 to 4 inches of G&B Organics Soil Building Conditioner around the base of the plant to protect their root zones, being careful to keep it 4 inches away from their trunks.

  • Once nighttime temperatures drop to below freezing for a few consecutive days, turn off your irrigation system and drain the valves - Simple Winterizing Instructions.

  • Disconnect and drain hoses, then store in garage.

  • Plant spring blooming bulbs with G&B Organics Bud & Bloom and mulch with G&B Organics Soil Building Conditioner. Plant it forward – Dig, Drop, Done!

  • Use Bonide Molemax to repel burrowing rodents and Plantskydd to protect perennials from deer, squirrels & rabbits.

  • Protect your broad leaf evergreens -- rhododendrons, laurels, and photinia -- with Bonide Wilt Stop now and again in January to lessen winter damage.

  • Avoid using salt-based, de-icing products in or around garden areas for snow removal. Moana recommends Sierra Blue Snow & Ice Melt which is friendly to the environment, pets and plants.

HIGH DESERT BIRD OF THE MONTH
Scrub Jays
Aphelcoma woodhouseii and Aphelcoma californica
The birds that we commonly refer to as scrub jays over much of Washoe County are actually two closely related species: the California scrub jay and the Woodhouse scrub jay. The Woodhouse jay was officially recognized in 2016. Birds of both species are characterized by attractive blue and gray coloration, relatively (larger than a robin) size, and notable jay-like behavior; loud, brash, and curious. These intelligent birds are often seen acting as lookouts on roof peaks, wires, and at the top of trees, leaving their perches with a distinctive rhythm of wingbeats alternating with a long, deep glide. The primary difference in the species is that the Woodhouse’s ‘necklace’ or breastband is not as bright, and color is more muted, overall, with a straighter bill.

TIMELY TIPS FOR BIRD FEEDING:
  • Feed high fat, high caloric content seeds to help satisfy birds’ cold weather needs. Nyjer®, peanuts and finch blend all add needed calories. Our No Mess Plus Blends contain Bark Butter Bits® for an easy way to boost nutrition at feeders or try our Winter SuperBlend™ - a complete winter food source.
  • Install a birdbath heater to ensure a steady supply of water. Remember, birds still need to bathe even in winter to keep their feathers conditioned for insulation and flight and need a reliable source of clean drinking water.
  • Add suet and Bark Butter feeders to maximize the number of winged visitors to your yard.
  • Install a clear plastic weather dome to protect tube feeders from rain and snow.
Has Finally Arrived!
Made of medium chip hearts, hot pepper (of course) and then decorated with millet, cranberries and safflower seed eye. Seed can’t be kicked all over the place like loose seed can. No waste, no mess, never melts! Great for year-round bird feeding and an UNBELIEVABLY cute gift!

·   Select tree with firm needles that don’t drop when tree is raised a few inches and dropped to the ground
·   The bottom of the stump should be moist with some sap present. When home, cut 2 inches from stump & immediately plunge into bucket of warm water with SUPERthrive added.
Water daily with SUPERthrive. If left without water, tree will form a seal which prevents it from taking up any water.
