Timely, Local High Desert Tips
Now is the time to ... (for March, as weather & soil conditions permit)
- Feed lawn with G&B Organics Lawn Fertilizer. Aerate your lawn and if necessary, dethatch.
- Apply pre-emergent weed control to prevent germination of weeds and unwanted plants in your landscape. Moana recommends: Green Light Amaze and Monterey Weed Impede for flower beds & non-planted areas, hillsides, paths, etc.).
- Prevent and kill many lawn weeds with Bonide Weed Beater Complete - a pre and post-emergent.
- Plant trees and shrubs while they are still dormant - before they break bud.
- Feed existing fruit trees with G&B Organics Citrus & Fruit Tree Fertilizer.
- With wild birds' natural food supply at its lowest this month, offer them high energy foods like peanuts, suet, Bark Butter and mealworms.
- Begin feeding houseplants with Bonide Liquid Plant Food, Grow More Sea Grow All Purpose Plant Food or Osmocote Outdoor & Indoor Slow Release Fertilizer as new growth begins.

Carmel's March High Desert Bird of the Month:
Northern (Red-Shafted) Flicker
Scientific name: Colaptes auratus
Northern Flickers are large, brown woodpeckers with handsome black-scalloped plumage that live year-round in Nevada. Their brown plumage is richly patterned with black spots, bars, and crescents. The red-shafted (western) and yellow-shafted (eastern) forms of Northern Flickers were once classified as different species. Red-shafted or yellow-shafted refers to the color of the undersides of wing and tail feathers. The two forms hybridize extensively in the area between their two ranges. It is not unusual at all to see a hybrid here, sometimes with yellow wing and tail feathers and the red mustache; or red-shafted with red nape crescent instead of red mustache.

Debbie's Shrub of the Month: Dwarf Flowering Almond
This hardy, early spring blooming shrub puts on a spectacular show of numerous small double pink almond like flowers along its stems. It likes moist but not wet growing conditions and appreciates a thick mulch. Prune after flowers are done if needed.
Bree's Plant of the Month: Arabis (Garden Rockcress)
This hardy, low growing perennial is an excellent choice for borders and rock gardens and perfect for the novice gardener. Profuse, sweetly scented blooms of pinks, purples, reds, blues and whites adorn a dense carpet of grey-green foliage. Try mixing with spring-flowering bulbs for a spectacular show.
Bree's Timely Tips for March: (as weather & soil conditions permit)
- Plant tender bulbs and tubers like Gladiolas, Lilies and Dahlias in pots now and transplant in garden when weather permits for earlier blooms. You can continue planting additional bulbs every two weeks until mid-June to ensure continual blooms.
- Plant Pansies, Primrose & Violas now but cover them at night if there is danger of frost.
- Perennial vegetables like Asparagus, Rhubarb, Horseradish, and Artichokes can be planted now.
- In mid-month, crops like Peas, Cauliflower, Leek, Onion, Radish and early Potatoes can be planted.
