SHRUB
OF THE MONTH
‘Royal Purple’ Smokebush
Dark foliage, smoky blooms, and warm fall colors make this an excellent addition to the garden. Plant with other shrubs to accentuate its colors or use it as an informal specimen. Easy to grow in average soil, but tolerates poor, rocky, infertile soils & requires excellent drainage. Water deeply, regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system; reduce frequency once established. Fertilize in spring. Full sun.

PLANT
OF THE MONTH
Hardy Hibiscus
A must-have perennial for anyone who loves big, easy-care plants. Flowers are usually pink, red, or white with big, showy leaves that are bright green or maroon. It dies back to the ground after the first freeze, but once warm weather returns in spring it pops out of the ground like a Jack-in-a box. Resistant to insects, diseases, and hungry deer.

- Water newly planted trees, shrubs, perennials & roses 3-4 times per week in July and August.
- Avoid late afternoon and evening watering to prevent leaf diseases on lawn, shrubs and especially roses.
- Check all plants weekly to be sure they are getting adequate water. Established trees, shrubs, perennials & roses require 1 inch per week throughout their root zones.
- Inspect irrigation system regularly for leaks, clogged emitters, broken/clogged heads and other problems. Adjust watering schedule as weather dictates.
- Continue to pinch off new growth of mums, asters and late-blooming tall sedums until mid-July.
- Earwigs are active in many yards – these guys eat at night, so you’ll only see the destruction they’ve wrought in the daylight. Use Bonide Bug and Slug Killer, Bonide Eight or Diatomaceous Earth.
- Fertilize roses for the third and final time at the end of the month with G&B ORGANICS Rose & Flower Fertilizer. Do not fertilize after August 1st.
