TIMELY TIPS
Winter Precipitation
Mother Nature was rather stingy with her moisture these last few months. Remember, plants in the ground, especially newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials, need the equivalent of one inch of precipitation per month. Plants in containers need more since they dry out faster. If you haven’t checked your soil moisture and watered as needed already, it’s time to do so now! Visit this helpful link on high desert winter watering to read our fact sheet titled IF-13 Winter Watering.

  • Provide birds with a supply of high fat seed like Nyjer, Peanuts, Finch Blend and Black Oil Sunflower Seeds to help them stay warm – especially important when there is a heavy snowfall.

  • Stamp down the snow below feeders. Ground feeding birds such as dark-eyed juncos, doves, quail and many sparrows will be able to gather up the seed that drops from the feeders if they don’t have deep snow to contend with.

  • Regularly check plants for signs of damage from ice, snow, wind or animals and lack of winter water.

  • Apply Bonide All Seasons Horticultural and Dormant Oil Spray to trees & shrubs to prevent insects. Use according to directions for the correct dormant spray rate.

  • Remove heavy snow loads from evergreen branches by gently sweeping snow off with a broom. If branches have been anchored to the ground, gently lift them from underneath with a broom. Avoid beating tree branches with any heavy tools.

  • Allow any ice that accumulates on tree branches to melt. Avoid cracking ice with heavy objects.

  • Light pruning of deciduous (leaves fall off in winter) trees & shrubs can be done this month. Wait until late winter or very early spring before buds break to do heavy pruning. Immediately prune back any branches damaged by snow and ice.

  • Most houseplants require less water and much less, if any, fertilizer, because of their slow growth during their semi-dormant period; violets and orchids are the exceptions.

  • Monitor houseplants for insect problems that often occur when plants become stressed due to insufficient light, overheated rooms or improper water and fertilizing techniques. Isolate new houseplants or gift plants before adding to your existing plants. Pests to look for include spider mites, scale, mealybugs, whitefly and fungus gnats. Moana recommends Bonide Systemic Houseplant Inset Control, Neem Oil or Insecticidal Soap; use according to labels.

  • Now is a great time to begin re-designing and budgeting for garden improvements. Contact one of our expert plant doctors to schedule an at-your site consultation.

WINTER BIRD FEEDING
Foods high in fat are essential for songbirds to thrive (and sometimes simply survive) in the winter.
Our backyard suet feeders provide a direct source of high energy fat.
Stored body fat is the primary energy supply that fuels a bird between meals, through cold winter nights and throughout migration. Songbirds may use up to ¾ of their fat reserves during one winter night! If sources of high-fat foods are available, they can entirely replenish those fat reserves during the next day. In some birds this can amount to a 10% fluctuation in their daily body weight.  When a bird exhausts all of its fat reserves, protein, scavenged mostly from muscles, is used to sustain its energy needs. It is important for birds to eat plenty of fat calories each day in order to maintain their strength and fitness.
Our backyard suet feeders provide a direct source of high energy fat and many seeds
(sunflower, safflower and Nyjer) provide high levels of fat due to their substantial oil content.

"FESTIVAL OF TREES"
The AWCMS's 2020 inaugural Festival of Trees was a success! Those who attended, volunteered or donated a tree all shared the Holiday Spirit in order to auction 17 beautifully decorated trees December 4th - 12th. Business and individual sponsors had great fun decorating their trees the week prior to the event and Moana Nursery South played Christmas music throughout the entire event to keep everyone in a holiday mood. AWCMS, with the help of Moana Nursery South, our sponsors and donors, raised about $7,000 through the silent auction and donations. Net proceeds of the event will benefit local community health and service projects. Our philanthropy committee (CAPP) is busy reviewing applicants and will bring their recommendations to our board in early 2021.
A big thank you to all the donors, sponsors, Moana Nursery South and the AWCMS volunteers who helped make this event a success. 2020 has been a difficult year, but The Festival of Trees helped end it on a cheerful note.
