Gardening Tips for May/June
LANDSCAPE PLANTS. All evergreens, perennials, roses, shrubs, trees, and vines can go into the ground now.
SUMMER BULBS. When the soil warms up, plant cannas, dahlias, gladiolus, and tuberous begonias.
DIVIDE SPRING BULBS. After the leaves turn brown, dig up crowded clumps of daffodils, tulips, and other spring bulbs and gently pull the bulbs apart. Before replanting, till 2 inches of compost and a handful of complete fertilizer into the soil.
FERTILIZE. After bloom, feed spring-flowering shrubs and start a monthly fertilizing program for long-blooming annuals, perennials, and container plants. Fertilize bluegrass lawns by midmonth. Feed roses this month, then once a month through mid-August.
PROTECT ANNUALS AND VEGETABLES. To protect newly transplanted annuals and vegetables from frost, cover them with floating row covers on cold nights.
SUPPORT PERENNIALS. When tall perennials, such as aster, delphinium, peony, and Shasta daisy, reach about 8 to 12 inches high, stake plants or place hoop supports over them.
FEED LAWNS. With a high-nitrogen fertilizer; repeat the process in 4-6 weeks.
PRUNE. Finish pruning roses. Prune spring-flowering shrubs, such as forsythia, quince, and lilacs after bloom. Remove dead, diseased, or injured branches wherever you find them.
APHIDS. Depending on the severity of the infestation blast them off with a strong spray of water, or spray with insecticidal soap.

GETTING TO KNOW US!
Chad Morris, Assistant Nursery Manager

Chad was born in Hope, Arkansas. At the age of 8, he moved to the Reno/Sparks area and resided here until the age of 12. Following that, Chad and his mother took over the Canyon Ranch Resort in Sierraville, CA. They lived at and ran the resort for shortly over two years until it was destroyed by the flood of 1995 leaving them to find a new home in Calpine, CA. Chad graduated high school in 1999, ranking fifth in his class. Shortly after that, Chad was hired at the Moana Lane store. In 2001, Chad took the Cooperative Extension Nursery Training, which peaked his interest about the Nursery business. With the new management changes that took place in 2002 Chad was promoted to Assistant Nursery Manager. In 2003 he became one of the youngest International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist in our area and is continuing his education in the Nursery/Landscape business. We are sure to see Chad’s name in our industry for years to come.

Spruce Up Your Landscape!
Want to add something different to your landscape? We have a unique selection of spruce and other evergreens that will really knock your socks off. . .
Weeping Blue Spruce Picea pungens ‘Procumbens’
This is a spreading, undulating groundcover that grows best in full sun. It is very effective when draped over a rock wall or slope.
Globe Blue Spruce Picea pungens ‘Globosa’
A round globe shaped dwarf Blue Spruce that looks great in any yard. Likes full sun and grows very slow. To maintain the desired globe shape, prune out any upright or vigorous shoots.
Weeping Norway Spruce Picea abies ‘Pendula’
A dark green weeping spruce that is faster growing than the weeping blue spruce. Plant in an area of your yard where it can be viewed up close!
These three varieties are readily available in both our stores plus we have many more ornamental evergreens that will add the final touches to any landscape.
