Gardening Tips
Now is the time to prune summer flowering shrubs (butterfly bush, spirea, rose ofsharon). A good rule of thumb is to prune back by 1/3. Don’t prune spring flowering
shrubs (forsythia, lilac, flowering quince & almond) until after they bloom. Cut branches
to force indoors for some early spring color.
Cool season vegetable seed or seedlings — asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, onions, peas, potatoes, turnips & garlic — can be planted around the first of April. Quick growing
salad crops such as lettuce, spinach and radishes can also be planted.
Lilies, glads, dahlias, iris and other summer flowering bulbs can be planted now. Makesure to add bone meal to the planting holes for good summer blooms. Start begonias,
caladiums, callas, cannas, etc. in pots on a sunny windowsill indoors. Wait to plant them
outside until all risk of frost is past. Both Moana locations have a good selection of these
bulbs listed above.
Plant hardy annuals like pansies and primrose. They will add to the color of spring bulbsthat should be blooming soon.
Trim ornamental grasses close to the ground before new growth starts. It helps to wrapan elastic cord around the whole clump and use a saw to cut the old stems below the
cord.
Thatch and aerate your lawn. This allows for improved water and fertilizer penetrationand also promotes good root development.
Apply pre-emergent weed killer to garden beds.
Fertilize your lawn with Scotts Super Turf Builder. If you had problems with crabgrasslast year, use Scotts Super Turf Builder Plus Halts.
Now is also the time to fertilize trees and shrubs. Ask one of our Moana teammates torecommend the best fertilizer for your specific needs.
Arbor Day is April 30th this year. Make it a family tradition to plant a tree every arbor dayeither in your yard or at a public park. Trees provide shade, filter the air and provide
habitat for wildlife. Visit our web site or either store for a planting guide.
NATIONAL GARDEN MONTH
April is national garden Month! Gardening is fun and rewarding, and it feels good to be
around green, growing things. But did you know there are measurable health benefits to
gardening and enjoying plants? Here are some facts based on research in horticultural
therapy:
Simply looking at trees and vegetation reduces stress, lowers blood pressure andrelieves muscle tension.
In one study, women 50 and older who gardened at least once a week had higher bonedensity than those who jogged, walked, swam or did aerobics.
Physicians in ancient Egypt prescribed walks in gardens for the mentally disturbed.
Gardening can produce endorphin highs similar to those experienced when joggingand cycling.
Working gardens and natural scenes were used to maintain morale aboard the Sovietspace station Mir.
A study of British Columbia residences for Alzheimer’s patients showed that, at theresidences with gardens, the rate of violent incidents declined by 19 % over two years.
At the non-garden residences, the violent incidents increased by 680%!
For elderly patients in particular, gardening can stimulate all the senses, by providinginteresting sights, tactile experiences, fragrances, sounds, and delicious flavors.
Given all this evidence, it’s no surprise that one study concludes: “Those who are involved
in gardening find life more satisfying and feel they have more positive things happening
in their lives.”

MOANA WATERWORKS
Finally, spring is here and the cold winter months are soon to be forgotten as we begin our
spring cleaning to get our yards in shape for the coming warmth. Do you like the way your
yard looks now? Perhaps you want to make some changes to create a little variety and
interest. Maybe something new like a water feature? Imagine if you can, quiet reflecting
pools, dancing waterfalls, and gurgling streams-water in all its many forms brings both
energy and charm into a garden. Whether it reflects the sky and clouds, a piece of garden
sculpture, or the arching branches of a tree, a garden pool creates an ever-changing picture.
The cooling effect of a fountain or waterfall on hot summer days and evenings can be so
welcome. For gardeners, a water garden opens up a whole new world of possibilities.
Adding a water feature, whether it is a pond, stream, fountain, or waterfall, requires as
much attention to planning as it does to building. Before you start digging, you’ll want to
consider the location of the feature, the material needed to build it, and whether it will
require a pump or filter. Water plants and fish are also another consideration to keep in
mind as well as landscape plants around the feature. Is your mind spinning? Need help or
ideas? Our recently developed moana waterworks division has been set up to help you to
create the perfect water feature. Whether you do it yourself or have our waterworks team
install it, we have the staff and materials to make it all happen. Visit the Moana store
nearest you and we’ll help you get started on the water feature of your dreams.
ROCK WALLS
Rock walls are visually appealing and relatively affordable. A tour around many neighborhoods
will reveal examples of rock walls being used for different purposes. In some
cases, rock walls are used as a landscaping tool to simply dress up an otherwise ordinary
slope or bank. In other cases, rock walls may be used as a structural wall to retain soil.
Our Moana Rock teammates at our South Virginia location can show you the wide array of
decorative rock that we stock, from big boulders to smaller cobble, and give you valuable
information on how to build your own rock wall.

MOANA PLANT PREVIEWS
TREES:
One of the most durable flowering trees in the Truckee Meadows
is the
Flowering Crabapple. These trees are extremely hardy toour climate and do very well in our poor alkaline soils. They
produce abundant colorful flowers each spring and the resulting
fruit is ornamental and loved by the birds. We grow several
varieties from which to choose.
Malus ‘Brandywine’:
vigorous, shapely to 12-15' tall and wide, double rose pink blooms, fruit yellowish green, leaves have a
reddish cast.
Malus ‘Indian Magic’:
rounded head to 12-15' tall & wide, redbuds open to single deep pink flowers, long lasting small fruit red
to orange.
Malus ‘Klehms Bechtel’:
rounded shape, beautiful double pinkflowers, sparse fruit, and orange to orange-red fall color.
Malus ‘Louisa’:
strong weeping habit to 15' tall and wide, pinkflowers, yellow fruit, dark green leaves.
Malus ‘Profusion’:
upright spreading to 15' tall and wide, deepred buds, single deep purplish pink flowers, fruit is dark red and
long lasting, foliage is purple when young maturing to bronzy
green.
Malus ‘Spring Snow’:
upright rounded habit to 20' tall and 15'wide, one of the showiest white crabapples with abundant large
flowers, no fruit, bright green foliage.
SHRUBS:
One of the first shrubs to bloom in the spring is the
Forsythia. This yellow flowering shrub can be spotted all over town with its
big splashes of yellow, and boy do we get calls from homeowners
wondering what it is. We grow and sell the
Lynwood GoldForsythia.
This garden favorite grows to 8' tall (but can be prunedto lower heights). Its stems are covered in bright, yellow flowers
each spring before the foliage appears. Use it as shrub border or as
an accent plant. In the fall the leaves turn a unique purple color.
Pink Flowering Quince
sometimes beats the forsythia when itcomes to bloom time. Its pink flowers are held close to the main
stem showing its bright colors before foliage appears. Flowering
quince is easy to grow and virtually indestructible. It tolerates
extremes of cold and heat and loves our native soil.
It can develop an interesting branch structure that would fare
well in a Japanese garden.
DECORATING WITH HOUSEPLANTS
How does your indoor garden grow? Not at all in a row
anymore. When houseplants are placed in thoughtful
compositions, they lend new life to your rooms.
As sunrooms grow more popular in American homes, so
does the desire to display houseplants. But an artfully
arranged indoor garden means more than marching plants
along a windowsill or suspending them from macramé
hangers. It requires attention to balance, scale, texture, and
detail—the same factors that influence any arrangement of
art or furnishings. For instance, massing plants similar to the
way they are gathered in a flower bed—by color, shape, or
species—will give your design more impact. Also, keeping
the rest of the room neutral in palette and light on pattern
will prevent the greenery from getting lost in space.
Arranging Houseplants
Display plants on the wall, like paintings. Wall-mountedshelving lets you create pleasing compositions.
Use creative containers, such as ceramic pots, paintedpots or almost any vessel that will hold water, to dress up
plants, much as fabrics embellish furniture.
Vary the heights of plants; a change in altitude willincrease eye appeal, just as it does in outdoor landscapes.
Use trailing plants, such as ivy, to visually connect shelves.
A single houseplant specimen can make a statement.
Pay attention to the different shades of green amonghouseplants, and then mix them up in your display.
Vary textures. Display velvety violets beside smoothskinnedivy, for example.
Remember that a sunroom or sunporch isn’t the onlyspot to gather greenery. Any room in the house that gets
ample sunlight can be an indoor garden.
With a few simple suggestions, almost any room can become
a beautiful atrium.
