Timely, Local High Desert Tips ...
Now is the Time To ...
  • Adjust your irrigation clock to shorten watering times as weather cools. Inspect irrigation system for leaks and clogged or broken emitters and heads. Move emitters out from the base of plants as they grow.
  • Purchase spring blooming bulbs now for best selection, but wait to plant until later in October and November.
  • Create a bird habitat in your backyard with trees, shrubs & perennials that provide food and shelter to birds.
  • Install a new lawn or repair bare spots with Bonide Dura-Turf Premium Grass Seed and Lawn Seed Starter, then cover with G&B Organics SBC.
  • Plant trees, shrubs, perennials and spring flowering bulbs - fall is the best time to plant.
  • Do not fertilize trees and shrubs with fast acting fertilizer between September 1 and March 15th. If your landscape is nutrient deficient, consider mulching with G&B Compost or SBC (Soil Building Conditioner) or feed with a slow release fertilizer like G&B Organics All Purpose or Gro- Power Toss'n'Gro.

New Temple Bells from Local Artist Couple ...
we are excited to introduce local artists, John and Nancy Kendrick who create beautiful temple bells repurposed from salvaged steel CO2 and oxygen tanks. Each bell is designed to create an experience of peace, tranquility and reflection; its tone is pitched to a note providing a beautiful, meditative, and long-resonating sound. The bell's striker is a recycled hockey puck actually used in sporting events. They also create a tabletop chimes and singing bowl from recycled steel tanks. Currently available at the ML store only.

Carmel's September High Desert Bird of the Month:         Barn Owl

Scientific name:
Tyto alba

How to identify:
These medium-sized owls have long, rounded wings and short tails, which combine with a buoyant, loping flight to give them a distinctive flight style. The legs are long and the head is smoothly rounded, without ear tufts. Barn Owls are pale overall with dark eyes. They have a mix of buff and gray on the head, back, and upperwings, and are white on the face, body, and underwings. When seen at night they can appear all white.

Habitat: Barn Owls require large areas of open land over which to hunt. This can either be marsh, grasslands, or mixed agricultural fields. For nesting and roosting, they prefer quiet cavities, either in trees or man-made structures such as barns or silos.

September 10: It's All about the Soil and the Miracles of Mulch
Abundant crops and beautiful landscapes begin with living soil and continue with regular mulching - the finishing touch in your landscape that works miracles in your soil. Gisele Schoniger, Organic Gardening Educator at Kellogg Garden Products, will show you how the key to gardening success begins with the soil and why our northern Nevada soil (which is really dirt) needs to be amended and fed. She will also share the many benefits of organic mulch, convincing you that it is indeed a miracle worker. Gisele's wealth of gardening wisdom is drawn from her experiences as an ornamental horticulturist, interiorscape business owner, horticultural therapist and gardener.

This seminar is a must for everyone who wants to grow anything in their yard, no matter where you live!

September 17: Fall Container Demonstration
Join Moana's award-winning Floral Designer Gigi Williams for a demonstration on how to design and plant a fall container that will last until November.  Containers are Gigi's specialty and she loves trying out new plant combinations. You'll be provided with a plant list and planting & design tips that you can apply to your own creations. Demonstration will be held at the Moana Lane Store instead of in the Landscape & Design Center.

September 24: the Fine Art of Growing Garlic
Join Master Gardener and Garlic Connoisseur Earstin Whitten to learn how to grow garlic successfully in the northern Nevada. Topics will include soil preparation, cultivation, harvesting, propagation and curing garlic. Earstin's specialty is growing heirloom organic garlic. He will have a few recipes to share as well

October 1: Welcome to Nevada Gardening
Are you looking for information on how to succeed at gardening, despite the challenges of our northern Nevada environment? Plant doctor & horticulturist Lisa Braginton will discuss soils, best watering practices, and some of the plants that survive and even thrive here. We'll share proven tips and commiseration!

All seminars are free and held at Moana Nursery, 1190 W. Moana Lane, in our Landscape and Design Center unless otherwise stated. Seminars begin promptly at 10 a.m. and last one hour unless otherwise noted. Please arrive 15 minutes early as seating is limited to 60 and is first come, first served.
