|Timely, Local High Desert Tips ...
Now is the Time To ...
- Adjust your irrigation clock to shorten watering times as weather cools. Inspect irrigation system for leaks and clogged or broken emitters and heads. Move emitters out from the base of plants as they grow.
- Purchase spring blooming bulbs now for best selection, but wait to plant until later in October and November.
- Create a bird habitat in your backyard with trees, shrubs & perennials that provide food and shelter to birds.
- Install a new lawn or repair bare spots with Bonide Dura-Turf Premium Grass Seed and Lawn Seed Starter, then cover with G&B Organics SBC.
- Plant trees, shrubs, perennials and spring flowering bulbs - fall is the best time to plant.
- Do not fertilize trees and shrubs with fast acting fertilizer between September 1 and March 15th. If your landscape is nutrient deficient, consider mulching with G&B Compost or SBC (Soil Building Conditioner) or feed with a slow release fertilizer like G&B Organics All Purpose or Gro- Power Toss'n'Gro.

Carmel's September High Desert Bird of the Month: Barn Owl
How to identify:
These medium-sized owls have long, rounded wings and short tails, which combine with a buoyant, loping flight to give them a distinctive flight style. The legs are long and the head is smoothly rounded, without ear tufts. Barn Owls are pale overall with dark eyes. They have a mix of buff and gray on the head, back, and upperwings, and are white on the face, body, and underwings. When seen at night they can appear all white.
Habitat: Barn Owls require large areas of open land over which to hunt. This can either be marsh, grasslands, or mixed agricultural fields. For nesting and roosting, they prefer quiet cavities, either in trees or man-made structures such as barns or silos.
