Carmel's September High Desert Bird of the Month:
How to identify:
Lesser Goldfinches are tiny, stub-billed songbirds with long, pointed wings, and short, notched tails. Males are bright yellow below with a glossy black cap and white patches in the wings; their backs can be glossy black or dull green (particularly on the West Coast). They have a black tail with large, white corners. Females and immatures have olive backs, dull yellow underparts, and black wings marked by two whitish wingbars.
Lesser Goldfinches feed in weedy fields, budding treetops, and the brush of open areas and edges. Depending on food availability, they may concentrate in mountain canyons and desert oases, but they are also fairly common in suburbs.

|Bree's September Planting Tips |Fall is the time to plant perennial seeds and bulbs. Once the soil temperature drops below 60° F, plant tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, dwarf irises, anemone, peonies, crocus and other spring-blooming bulbs. Select healthy, disease free bulbs. Add Dr. Earth Premium Bone Meal or Bulb Food to the planting hole as you prepare the soil.
Winter pansies, ornamental kale and cabbage and fall blooming chrysanthemums can be planted now to add color to the garden when summer flowers have faded.
Fall is the best time to shop for perennials, trees and shrubs. Fall planting encourages good root development, allowing the plants to get established before spring. If weather is dry, provide water up until the ground freezes.
