Now is the time to ...
- Hummingbirds have arrived & orioles will begin appearing any day. Now's the time to put out oranges and grape jelly for orioles and WBU Hummingbird & Oriole Nectar for both hummingbirds and orioles. Be sure to change the nectar every few days so it doesn't spoil.
- Prune spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, lilacs, quince, almond, viburnum, magnolias, rhododendrons, azaleas) immediately after they bloom.
- Begin to regularly pinch back fall-blooming perennials - mums, asters & tall sedums; pinch weekly until mid-July to promote stocky growth.
- Deadhead spring bulbs once they've finished flowering, but allow foliage to wither completely before removing.
- Stake peonies to support blooms when they reach 10" in height.
- Move your citrus trees (Meyer's lemon, etc.) outside when night time temperatures are above 45 degrees.
- Spread several inches of G&B Organics Planting Compost or G&B Organics Harvest Supremeon vegetable and herb beds. Use as a mulch and/or continue to use as an amendment while you are still planting.

Wind chimes are made with beautiful colored glass beads and bells to create a delightful sound and artisan look. Nana bells produce a distinctive sound due to an ancient technique of smelting brass, copper and iron. Each bell is hand tuned resulting in a mellow, melodic, echoing tone - a gentle reminder to slow down, relax and enjoy the breeze. Both make terrific Mother's Day gifts.

Carmel's High Desert May Bird of the Month:
How to identify:
Tiny among birds, Anna's are medium-sized and stocky for a hummingbird. They have a straight, shortish bill and a fairly broad tail. When perched, wingtips meet the tip of their short tail. Anna's Hummingbirds are mostly green and gray, without any rufous or orange marks on the body. The male's head and throat are covered in iridescent reddish-pink feathers that can look dull brown or gray without direct sunlight.
Anna's Hummingbirds are common in yards, parks, residential streets, eucalyptus groves, riverside woods, savannahs, and coastal scrub. They readily come to hummingbird feeders and flowering plants, including cultivated species in gardens.
