Timely, Local High Desert Tips edited Lisa Braginton-RGB
Now is the Time To ...

Mother Nature was overly generous with precipitation last month! This is an ideal time to note drainage problems in your landscape and work to solve them as the soil dries out.

  • Feed lawn with G&B Organics Lawn Fertilizer. Aerate your lawn, and if necessary, dethatch.
  • Prevent and kill any existing crabgrass with Bonide Weed Beater Complete --a pre & post-emergent.
  • Plant fruit trees - pear, apple, peach, cherry, apricot, nectarine & plum -- on a dry day before buds swell with G&B Organics Planting Mix and G&B Organics Citrus & Fruit Tree Fertilizer; mulch with G&B Organics Soil Building Compost.
  • Plant trees and shrubs while they are still dormant -- before they break bud.
  • Feed existing fruit trees with G&B Organics Citrus & Fruit Tree Fertilizer.
  • Begin fertilizing houseplants with Bonide Liquid Plant Food, Grow More Sea Grow All Purpose Plant Food or Osmocote Outdoor & Indoor Slow Release Fertilizer as new growth begins.
  • With wild birds' natural food supply at its lowest this month, offer them high energy foods like peanuts, suet, Bark Butter and mealworms.

Bree's Plant of the Month: Primrose

Blooming in early spring, the primrose is one of the first flowers to bloom. Cold tolerance and easy maintenance make this cheery annual the perfect spring blooming plant for landscapes and containers. Bright colors include blues, pinks, reds, yellow, orange, purple and bi-colors. Primlet varieties are my favorite with ruffled multi-petal flowers.

Bree's March Gardening Tips:
  • You may be tempted to start removing winter mulches from your flower beds ...
but WAIT!! Instead, gradually pull the mulch back as the plants show signs of new growth over a period of days. This acclimates your plants, allowing the light and air to reach the new growth slowly.
  • For some early color, plant annuals like pansies, primrose and violas.

Carmel's March High Desert Bird of the Month:
Lesser Goldfinch

Scientific name:
Spinus psaltria
How to identify:
Lesser Goldfinches are tiny, stub-billed songbirds with long, pointed wings, and short, notched tails. Males are bright yellow below with a glossy black cap and white patches in the wings; their backs can be glossy black or dull green (particularly on the West Coast). They have a black tail with large, white corners. Females and immatures have olive backs, dull yellow underparts, and black wings marked by two whitish wingbars.
Lesser Goldfinches feed in weedy fields, budding treetops, and the brush of open areas and edges. Depending on food availability, they may concentrate in mountain canyons and desert oases, but they are also fairly common in suburbs.

This hardy early spring blooming shrub puts on a spectacular show of numerous small double pink almond like flowers along it stems. It likes moist but not wet growing conditions and appreciates a thick mulch. Prune immediately after flowers are done if needed.

Kevin's Featured Product: Nevada Green Crushed Rock
Our exceptionally wet winter and associated flooding have wreaked havoc on many driveways and parking areas in rural homes. The Nevada Green "drain rock" is a good product for resurfacing ground affected by erosion.
