Timely, Local High Desert Tips ... Now is the Time To ...
Aphids continue to reproduce, especially after recent rains stimulated new plant growth. To control, start with Lady Bugs (they eat aphids) and a hose (spray off aphids). If infestation is great, use Bon Neem II, Bonide Rose Rx, Bonide Tomato & Vegetable Spray, or Dr. Earth Insect Sprays. Bonide Systemic Insecticide Granules can also be used on all ornamentals.
- Use Dr. Earth Rhododendron, Azaela & Camellia Fertilizer to help green up conifers that are looking chlorotic (yellow).
- Mulch all garden beds and vegetables with Gardner & Bloome Soil Building Compost/Conditioner after thoroughly weeding and watering. 3 inches of compost will reduce your water requirements by up to 30%.
- Mulch vegetables with Gardener & Bloome Soil Building Compost to retain moisture.
- Fertilize vegetables with Dr. Earth Organic Fertilizers
- Fertilize annuals in containers, baskets & window boxes every 3-4 weeks with Dr. Earth Bud & Bloom or Dr. Earth Golden Bloom. Always water plants before adding fertilizer.
- Stake or cage tomatoes as they begin to grow.
- If your tomatoes are exposed to wind, apply Bonide Tomato & Blossom Set.
- Protect tomatoes from blossom end rot as soon as fruit sets with Bonide Rot Stop.

Matt's Shrub of the Month: Red Drift Roses
This easy-to-grow groundcover shrub is hard to beat for summer long flower power and hardiness. Plant it in full sun with other flowering plants, draped over a wall or anywhere you want non-stop color. Red Drift is water-wise when established and requires very little maintenance.
Bree's Perennial of the Month: Gaura
A true rival of the ever popular coneflower, Gaura is a low maintenance perennial that won't stop blooming in triple digit temperatures. With wispy wands covered in white or light pink, four petal blooms, Gaura is a perfect perennial for the high desert. Also known as bee blossom or wandflower it is very attractive to bees.
Karma's Products for Veggies & Melons:
Bonide Rot-Stop Tomato Blossom End Rot
Corrects calcium deficiency to control blossom end rot on tomatoes, cucumbers, melons and peppers. Apply to developing fruit and foliage after periods of heavy rain or rapid growth.
Bonide Tomato & Blossom Set SprayMakes blossoms set fruit despite poor weather. Nearly every blossom will produce larger, meatier, almost seedless tomatoes, ripening up to 3 weeks earlier. Also for use on other vegetables. Contains natural plant growth hormone Kinetin.
Bree's June Gardening Tip:
Is your garden craving some extra color? Consider "color spots" for instant color; these are summer flowering annuals grown in larger containers (4" and up), already in full bloom, thus the instant color. (Refer to "new annual arrivals" above for ideas.) Prior to planting, amend the soil and water the new plants before removing from the container. Plant these annuals with Dr. Earth Starter Fertilizer at the recommended spacing on the labels and water again. INSTANT COLOR!
June is an excellent month to add a few new perennials to your garden. Now is the time to divide spring flowering perennials like, primrose, arabis, and aubrietia. Pinch back annuals, including fuchsias, geraniums, cosmos and any other plant that is starting to get leggy. It is also time to plant warm weather veggies like corn, beans, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, squash, pumpkin and others.

Carmel's June Bird of the Month:
How to identify:
Male Bullock's Orioles have a black crown and back, a black eyeline and chin. The remainder of the male's body is orange-yellow to yellow. Their wings are black, edged in white with a large white patch. In contrast, the female and immature are mostly grayish brown to yellow. The female may also show some black on the throat and has pale white wingbars.
Habitat: Preferred habitat for the oriole is riparian (along rivers, streams, lakes) where there is likely to be cottonwood and willow. They can also be found in urban parks, especially near water or in suburban neighborhoods that have cottonwood trees.
How to attract one to your yard: The diet for both adults and young is almost exclusively insects. However, the adults will come to a nectar feeder, using the same solution as for hummingbirds. Feeders designed specifically for orioles often include a shallow dish for grape jelly and a place to attach orange halves. Oriole feeders, nectar and nesting material balls can be purchased at Moana Nursery.

June 24: What Are Flower Shows All About? Starts at 6 PM
Hosted by Reno Rose Society & open to the public.
A flower show is a competitive exhibition of floral designs and horticulture and often include educational exhibits; they help spread the word about the joys of gardening. The basic components of a flower show are a location, date, a chairman of the show, and a schedule stating the types of exhibits, staging for the exhibits and judges.
Accredited judges go through the horticulture, arrangements and photographs. One of the blue ribbon winners will receive "Best in Show." IF you want others to see your garden flowers, consider entering your flowers in one of the upcoming flower shows.
All seminars are free and held at Moana Nursery, 1190 W. Moana Lane in our Landscape and Design Center. Seminars begin at 10:00 AM and last one hour unless otherwise stated. Seating is limited to 60 and is first come, first served. Visit www.moananursery.com or call (775) 825-0600 for more information.

Easiest Way To Conserve Water:
- Conservation is a fact of life in the high desert.
- Landscape irrigation is the #1 water usage in the Truckee Meadows.
- Irrigation systems in our area average less than 60% efficiency. Most need help and updating.
- Fix that ... and you easily meet your conservation goals and more ... lower water bills, healthier plants & minimum water waste!
- Add water holding organic material to your soil - - amend or mulch - - and conserve even more!
Both your sprinkler & drip system can be improved with an investment in updating & modernization. Directional rotors, correct size emitters, drip line placement adjustments, controller management and much more are available. Regular repair, turn on/off and servicing are available too.
It's time to get serious about water conservation and we can help. The first important step is to make your system an efficient water distributor! Call us to schedule an appointment: (775) 825-0602 ext.134.
