Timely, Local High Desert Tips ... Now is the Time To ...
Squash bugs are starting to appear on squash, cucumbers, melons & pumpkins. Use Bonide Eight (also controls ants, cicadas, scale, earwigs & mealybugs) or Bon Neem II to control these destructive pests.
- Codling moths will have their second hatching soon. Use Tanglefoot Codling Moth Traps to monitor when it occurs. Then apply Captain Jack's Deadbug Brew, according to the label, to protect your apple crop form their hungry larvae.
- If you have not already, mulch your flower and vegetable beds immediately after weeding with 3 inches of Gardner & Bloome Soil Building Compost to reduce water requirements up to 30%, retain moisture and keep weeds under control.
- Fertilize container plants with Dr. Earth Bud & Bloom Booster, granular or liquid, every three weeks or Dr. Earth Golden Bloom liquid every two weeks; avoid applying in the heat of the day. Always water plants before adding liquid fertilizer.
- With summer heat here to stay for a while, proper watering is crucial. Click here for How to Water Wisely for Healthy Plants.

Classic Skin Care Solutions for Sunny Northern Nevada & Lake Tahoe
By Bree Lake
July is when most people are outdoors and basking in the hot sun. Though most of us use SPF, many of us inevitably get sunburned and/or battle dry skin. So consider treating your sunburn and dry skin naturally with plants from your garden. Aloe Vera, Chamomile, Rose Petals, Clary Sage, dried Calendula petals and Lavender. Some of these skin care solutions can be used straight from the plant while others can easily be made into a cold water infused facial wash, spray, toner, cream or oil.
At Moana safety is our #1 concern. Please consult your physician or dermatologist prior to using any home remedy.
Gail's Gardening Tip: Keep Planting Something
"Successive gardening" is a little tricky. The goal is to get as much product as possible from your garden or container by keeping your space full. Learning to harvest and replant the area quickly is key. Keep your seed packets handy and do repeat planting of carrots, lettuce, radishes, herbs, kale, beans and any of your favorites as soon as space opens up.
Always amend your soil with compost (Gardner & Bloome or Dr. Earth) before planting a new crop. Purchase vegetable starts to help increase vegetable production. Plant a square foot of lettuce starts, next to a square foot of lettuce seeds to create a successive crop for you to enjoy. This crop and others can be stretched even farther if you do more than one cutting. Gardening is a lesson of trial and error but the taste, nutritional value and satisfaction of growing your own food is well worth it.
July's High Desert Bird of the Month:
The Black-chinned Hummingbird is named for the dark chin and throat of the male. When the light hits just right, the male shows a band of iridescent purple below the chin. Black-chinned is usually the only hummingbird to nest in our area, with the exception of Calliope hummingbird in nearby mountains.
As with many hummingbird species, the female Black-chinned is dull metallic green on the back and flanks and grayish-white below. It is really difficult to pin down a female identification to a particular species, as most female hummingbirds look very similar.
