"Helps plants bounce back and thrive"

Growing Cold Hardy, High Desert Trees, Shrubs & Perennials. Spring looks quite different!

The trees are happy to see spring come, too!

Timely, Local High Desert Tips edited Lisa Braginton-RGB
Now is the time to ...

Yellowing Pine Needles
It is common for pines to shed needles annually. As long as the needles are on the inside of the branch (close to the trunk) instead of at the tip of the branch, there is nothing to worry about. If needles are browning and dropping at the tip of branches, there is a problem; in this instance, bring a branch in to one of our plant doctors for a diagnosis.

Pest Alert
Root Weevils are having a field day on numerous shrubs & peonies - you'll know you have them by their tell-tale notching of the leaves. To control, treat with a combination of Bonide Systemic Granule Insect Control with Bonide Eight. Make a note to apply Beneficial Nematodes next spring to control the weevils in their larval stage.
  • Mulch, mulch, mulch with G&B Organics Soil Building Conditioner, Compost or Planting Mixes
  • Heat stressed trees will drop some leaves to conserve moisture. Additional watering and mulching will help somewhat in this situation.
  • Watch closely for signs of scorch on tender new foliage - the margins (edges) of leaves turn brown and crispy - indicating lack of water and/or exposure to hot, drying winds.
  • Water infrequently and deeply - not frequently and lightly. Early morning is always the best time to water 4 am - 11 am are ideal. Click here for How to Water for Healthy Plants.
  • Pruning is generally not advised this month, with the exception of shrubs that have just flowered; prune immediately following their flowering.

"Succulents are Hot, Hot, Hot," says Moana's Florist Guru
If there's one fast growing trend in plant arrangements, it's the world of succulent gardens. They're immensely easy to grow and maintain, almost impossible to kill, thrive in dry environments and require very little water. Best of all they are simply beautiful and lend themselves to whatever shape style or arrangement you have in mind.

The Florist at Moana Nursery loves combing unique structures with a beautiful array of succulents, mosses, bark and pebbles.  Please visit us to design your own one of a kind succulent art or call us at 775-825-0671 to deliver an easy care succulent garden to a special someone!   Mention this newsletter blurb for a 15% discount on a custom succulent garden!

Debbie's High Desert Shrub of the Month:

Hibiscus syriacus (Rose of Sharon or Althea)

Depending on the variety, it can grow 3-8' tall and spread 3-10' (can be trimmed after its done blooming to keep shorter) and can be trained or purchased as a small tree. Rose of Sharon puts on a beautiful show of hibiscus flowers, single or double, in the summer and fall, and comes in many colors.

Carmel's August High Desert Bird of the Month:

California Quail

Scientific name:
Callipepla californica

The California Quail is a handsome, round soccer ball of a game bird with a small head and bill and a distinctive, curled black head plume in both sexes. Its wings are short and very broad and tail is fairly long and square. Adult males are rich gray and brown, with a black face outlined with bold white stripes. Females are a plainer brown and lack the facial markings. Both sexes have a pattern of white, cream, and chestnut scales on the belly. Young birds look like females but have a shorter topknot. Legs and feet are gray in both. Though the topknot looks like a single feather, it is actually a cluster of six overlapping plumes.

California Quail lay 12 to 16 eggs in a shallow ground depression lined with grass. (Some nests can contain as many as 28 eggs which may be the result of females laying eggs in nests other than their own, a behavior known as "egg-dumping.")

Bree's Plant of the Month: Sedums
No garden is complete without the gorgeous fall color of sedums. This perennial (plant once and enjoy year after year) is a succulent that looks good from spring through fall. They require minimal attention, grow upright or trailing and are drought tolerant. 'Autumn Joy' bursts with bright magenta blooms and can be used in dried floral arrangements.

Hot Pepper Seed Cylinders to Feed Birds ...           NOT Squirrels
If you are looking to feed just the birds without the expense of feeding squirrels, hot pepper may be the problem solver for you. Your favorite birds will enjoy the Hot Pepper Seed Cylinder, yet squirrels typically will not.

Made of tree nuts, black oil sunflower, sunflower chips, peanuts, and hot pepper, the Hot Pepper Seed Cylinder is perfect for enticing a wide variety of birds to your yard, while deterring squirrels. Try offering a Hot Pepper Seed Cylinder on one of our seed cylinder feeders or in our
Dinner Bell Feeder and watch your birds chow down.

Bree's Timely Planting/Gardening Tips for August:
  • Check hanging baskets and containers daily -- be sure to water thoroughly and deeply each time you water. To keep lush all summer, feed with G&B Organics High Bloome liquid with each watering.
  • Remove dead flowers on your annuals and perennials to encourage more flowering.
  • Continue harvesting herbs to use fresh, dry, or freeze in small batches in ice cube tray. Pinch off developing flowers to retain essential oils and flavor in the plants' foliage.
