Timely, Local High Desert Tips - -
Now is the time to ...
Root Weevils are having a field day on numerous shrubs & peonies - you'll know you have them by their tell-tale notching of the leaves. To control, treat with a combination of Bonide Systemic Granule Insect Control with Bonide Eight. Make a note to apply Beneficial Nematodes next spring to control the weevils in their larval stage.
Ants have been reported by many as being a huge nuisance inside and outside - especially on patios & walkways. Treat with Bonide Revenge Ant Killer according to directions.
Heat stressed trees will drop some leaves to conserve moisture. Additional watering and mulching will help somewhat in this situation.
Mulch, mulch, mulch with G&B Organics Soil Building Conditioner, Compost or Planting Mixes.
Watch closely for signs of scorch on tender new foliage - the margins of leaves turn brown and crispy - indicating lack of water and/or exposure to hot drying winds.
Monitor newly planted trees and shrubs for insects or disease. Succulent new growth is often the first area to be attacked by insects.
Pruning is generally not advised this month, with the exception of shrubs that have just flowered; prune immediately following their flowering.

To celebrate Hot August Nights, we are happy to share a poem entitled "Memories of Old (Route) 66" ... penned by our Moana Nursery teammate, Frankie Arrington.
Memories of Old 66
You were already dying when I first met you,
but I didn't know it. I thought you would live forever.
You were the Grande Dame of the country,
the symbol of progress in the 20th century;
you opened the door of opportunity
for a restless nation on the move.
You were farmers fleeing the Dust Bowl,
Army transports in WWII;
You were hope & despair, adventure & heartbreak:

Carmel's August High Desert Bird of the Month:
Scientific name: Selasphorus rufus
The Rufous is a fairly small hummingbird with a slender, nearly straight bill, a tail that tapers to a point when folded, and fairly short wings that don't reach the end of the tail when the bird is perched. In good light, male Rufous Hummingbirds glow like coals: bright orange on the back and belly, with a vivid iridescent-red throat. Females are green above with rufous-washed flanks, rufous patches in the green tail, and often a spot of orange in the throat.
These hummingbirds typically breed in open or shrubby areas, forest openings, yards, and parks, and sometimes in forests, thickets, swamps, and meadows from sea level to about 6,000 feet. During their migration, look for Rufous Hummingbirds as high as in our mountain meadows up to 10,000 feet elevation.

Carmel's New Green Solutions Tray and Fly Thru Feeders. Ready to hang! They are made of maintenance-free, durable recycled material and are produced in the USA. Birds love perching on the rods of the tray feeders and it provides ample room for your hungry birds. Easy to clean and fill. Great for feeding live meal worms in.
Bree's Plant of the Month: Sedum
Also known as Stonecrop this showy leaf succulent is very drought tolerant. Sedum varieties can be low growing or upright and range in beautiful autumn colors like lime green, burgundy, magenta, and yellow. Some sedums produce clumping flowers atop their upright stems. These perennials are perfect for late summer blooming.
Debbie's High Desert Shrub of the Month:
'Dark Knight' Caryopteris
Commonly called Bluebeard, Blue Spiraea or Blue Mist. Low-mounded, deciduous shrub with aromatic foliage. Flowers are very attractive to butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects. Very effective in large groups, massed or as a low hedge. Valued for its late summer to fall flowers when few other shrubs are in bloom. Likes full sun and well drained soil; tolerates some drought. No serious insect or disease problems.
|Bree's August Planting Tips:
- With the hot temperatures, be sure to thoroughly water plants, hanging baskets and container gardens.
- Start perennial and biennial plants from seed either this month or next.
- Continue to deadhead perennials and annuals for a longer bloom season.
