My husbands new job has taken him to the Reno area. We are currently looking at purchasing a home. We are accustomed to a lot of large trees where we currently live. We are wondering what type of trees can be planted in the Reno/Sparks area and thrive.

Rochelle: Welcome to the high desert and our beautiful home. While our various micro-climates and soil conditions do present gardening and landscaping challenges, and some plants may not grow to the sizes you have previously experienced (or as fast as you may be use to), we have a host of appropriate trees that grow big & beautiful here. In the spring, a huge variety of ornamental fruit trees blossom all over town and we grow over 15 high desert hardy varieties of Maples alone. Our favorite evergreen that thrives here is the Austrian Pine, but the deciduous and evergreen choices are substantial. We like to feature trees with four season’s of interest (or at least three!). So, you can be confident of having many choices that fit your requirements. And, you will love all the unique features of our area, as we do.
