Many gardeners give up on their roses in the summer, believing they only produce quality flowers in the spring. Rose blossoms do tend to be smaller in the summer and the colors not quite as vivid because the summer heat forces the blooms to open before blossom size and color pigment have completely developed. But given the proper care, combined with a few simple pruning techniques, roses will re-bloom every six weeks until the first frost.

Planting Success in the Hot Summer

productsYes, you can plant during the dog days of summer! Simply follow these guidelines:

  1. Make sure the plant is properly watered during the days before transplanting.
  2. Transplant during the late afternoon or early evening.
  3. Water the plant immediately before removing from the pot. Soak the root ball.
  4. Water the hole before placing the plant in it.
  5. Never leave the roots exposed to sun, heat or wind. Remove plant from container and place immediately into the hole.
  6. Place the plant into hole and fill halfway with water. Allow water to settle the soil around the roots, then finish filling hole.
  7. Lightly firm soil around the plant.
  8. Once again, water the whole plant, leaves and all.
  9. Add a 3 inch layer of Gromulch or Scotts Nature Scapes.

Check the plant daily for the first couple of weeks. Transplants will need watering every day, if not more. If it is wilting, water the plant. Depending on the weather and plant, you may need to water twice a day until it becomes established. The larger the plant and/or the less roots-to-top-growth ratio, the more water will be needed.

Now is the Time...

products 1. Plant heat & drought resistant trees and shrubs.
Moana recommends:

  • Goldenrain Trees Barberry
  • Western Catalpa Cotoneaster
  • Bristlecone Pine Kinnikinnick
  • Burr Oak Blue Mist Spiraea
  • Austrian Pine Alpine Currant
  • Limber Pine Lilac
  • Ash Rugosa Rose
  • Honey Locust Eastern Ninebark
  • Hackberry Smokebush

2. Start composting your kitchen and yard waste. You’ll minimize landfill waste and improve
your soil with valuable nutrients.

Moana recommends:

  • Dr. Earth Compost Starter
  • Achla Spinning Composter

Other things to do in the garden:

  1. Allow certain dried flower heads, such as astilbe, coneflower and globe thistle, to remain standing for fall and winter interest.
  2. Keep vegetables picked so the plants will continue producing.
  3. Avoid letting squashes, zucchini, etc. become giant-sized. They will have little flavor.
  4. Remove caterpillars by hand.

Who's your bud? Not the budworm. When the weather warms up, you can bet this pest is on its way. The budworm (a type of caterpillar/moth) is gunning for your geraniums, petunias, snapdragons, and other flowering plants. Knowing the budworm's diet, habits, and the effective control methods, you will be armed and ready for combat.

quote of the week

Quotation of the Week:

"One of the greatest virtues of gardening is this perpetual renewal of youth and spring, of promise of flower and fruit that can always be read in the open book of the garden, by those with an eye to see, and a mind to understand."

WATERWISE TIPS

  • Detect and repair all leaks in your irrigation system.
  • Water the lawn or garden during the coolest part of the day (early morning is best). Do not water on windy days unless it’s by drip.
  • Water trees and shrubs, which have deep root systems, longer and less frequently than shallow-rooted plants that require smaller amounts of water more often.
  • Set sprinklers to water the lawn or garden only – not the street or sidewalk - to avoid runoff.

Banana Crepes

What You'll Need:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  •  1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup half-and-half cream
  • 6 bananas, halved lengthwise
  • 1 1/2 cups whipped heavy cream
  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon

Step by Step:

Sift flour and powdered sugar into a mixing bowl. Add eggs, milk, butter, vanilla, and salt; beat until smooth.

Heat a lightly greased 6 inch skillet. Add about 3 tablespoons batter. Tilt skillet so that batter spreads to almost cover the bottom of skillet.

Cook until lightly browned; turn and brown the other side. Repeat process with remaining batter, grease skillet as needed.

Melt 1/4 cup butter in a large skillet. Stir in brown sugar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and nutmeg. Stir in cream and cook until slightly thickened.

Add half the bananas at a time to skillet; cook for 2 to 3 minutes, spooning sauce over them.

Remove from heat.

Roll a crepe around each banana half and place on serving platter.

Spoon sauce over crepes. Top with whipped cream and a pinch of cinnamon.

Yield: 6 servings
