"We are so in bloom – our fountains are teeming with
flowers!"
says Janet Brawner, Green Goods Manager at the Moana Lane store.

This bold, handsome mug bearing the famous "Dad's Root
Beer" logo pays tribute to an American icon that was created nearly 70
years ago — and is still going strong. It's a cheerful gift that
can be given all year round, not just for Father's Day.
Come into the Florist at Moana to see this superb selection of
arrangements,
or you can place a custom order.

-
Fertilize annuals in containers, baskets and window
boxes with Scotts Miracle–Gro Bloom Booster.
-
Continue to spray emerging summer-blooming lilies
with PlantSkydd, if rabbits and deer have been a
problem.
-
Monitor lawn for weeds. Mow high (2-2 ½ inches)
so individual blades of grass can shade each other.
-
Continue to remove yellowing leaves of summer-flowering
bulbs.
-
Monitor succulent new growth for signs of aphids
(puckered stunted leaves).
Hose down affected plants. Don’t use strong chemicals if ladybugs
are present since they are predators of aphids.
-
Hot, dry weather can result in increased mite activity.
Symptoms include stippling of foliage. Remove affected foliage and
treat with Ortho Systemic Insect Control.
-
Continue to pinch off new growth of chrysanthemums,
asters and late-blooming tall sedums.
|
- Treat “Fairy Ring” – a soil fungus which appears
in circles or arcs accompanied by mushrooms.
Moana recommends: ProStar 70
- Control insect pests – including aphids, mealybugs, scale, spider
mites, thrips, whitefly and others–with beneficial bugs.
Moana recommends: Ladybugs and Praying Mantises

| Gardening in northern Nevada is often complicated
by the microclimates which greatly influence our gardening success. While
all gardeners must take into account sun exposure, drainage from eaves
and natural swales and the difficult soil environments created by (sub)urban
development, our lack of humidity exaggerates these effects. If you think
of moisture in the air as a sort of insulation, you'll readily see why
our temperature changes can be extreme.
One direct effect this has on our gardening practices is in the timing
of planting tender vegetables and ornamentals. Given the effects of microclimates
and our relatively short growing season, many gardeners choose to use
protection such as row covers, burlap, or season extenders like Walls
o' Water to get their gardens started.
Additionally, container gardening allows us to effectively create microclimates
of our own. Sturdy, frost-resistant pots or wooden half-barrels on heavy-duty
casters allow early planting of many different flowers and vegetables
that can be moved to the most advantageous location according to the current
conditions. Containers can be planted with beautiful combinations of edible
and purely ornamental crops, then placed to enhance the landscape as well
as to take advantage of sun or shade as the season progresses. Planting
in containers provides optimum soil and nutrient conditions as well.
Gardening in northern Nevada poses challenges, but the savvy gardener
who makes use of the products and expertise offered by Moana Nursery can
readily change those challenges into real gardening opportunities!

Summer Color
Color can make a strong impact in any landscape.
Choose areas that are visible to people and cars passing by to create a welcoming entrance to your home.
Add color around your patio for you to enjoy while outside, and inside as you look out your windows.
Plant annuals in the ground or in pots, allowing for you to create change as the growing season moves toward fall.
Select a beautiful container (Moana Nursery has a huge selection of large and small ones) to add more color.
Contact Shannan James at 825-0602 ext. 129 for more information on how Moana
Nursery's residential landscaping services can help you achieve the beautiful
color you envision for your landscape.

WATERWISE TIPS
- Detect and repair all leaks in your irrigation system.
- Water the lawn or garden during the coolest part of the day (early
morning is best). Do not water on windy days unless it’s by drip.
- Water trees and shrubs, which have deep root systems, longer and less
frequently than shallow-rooted plants that require smaller amounts of
water more often.
- Set sprinklers to water the lawn or garden only – not the street
or sidewalk - to avoid runoff.
