Things To Do in the Garden

40th Special
  • Give newly planted trees, shrubs, perennials and roses one inch of water per week throughout their root zones.
  • Rejuvenate overgrown shrubs including red twig dogwood, lilac and forsythia by removing one-third of the oldest canes.
  • Prune out all ground-level sucker growth from crabapple, apple, plum peach or apricot trees by cutting out growth below soil level.
  • Prune out weak, fast growing water sprouts that grow vertically from the branches of fruit trees, redbuds or other ornamental flower trees.
  • Continue to deadhead perennials & annuals to encourage more flowering.
  • Cut back, shear or remove flower spikes from catmint, perennial geraniums, salvia and delphiniums to promote blooms.
  • Monitor tomatoes during hot weather. They appreciate an even supply of moisture rather than a heavy soaking and then a drought. Mulching their roots can help.

Now is the time...

Cast Iron Fountains

Cast Iron Fountains

Choosing Cast Iron for your garden has many advantages.

  1. Cast Iron is frost proof. These fountains won’t break in the winter, no matter how many freeze-thaw cycles we experience.
  2. Cast Iron resonates with sound! Each fountain has a unique musical personality.
  3. Cast Iron Fountain bowls are thinner, enabling the water to flow in fine sheets over the edges. This creates an elegant appearance.
  4. Cast Iron Fountains are easy to install. No heavy equipment is required and they’re up and running quickly.

Living with Fire!

Living with Fire

Very timely now with the Angora Fire in Lake Tahoe. If you would like to learn more about this topic, please attend our seminar this Saturday, June 30th - "Living with Fire." Ed Smith, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension natural resource specialist, will discuss local wildfire behavior, the wildfire threat to homes, and make landscape design recommendations aimed at reducing the wildfire threat.

EPA Water Sense Partner

Water Sense LogoOur Landscape team understands water-wise practices and is Nevada's only certified partner in the EPA'S WATERSENSE program!

Talk with our Jack Motter, Jan Leggett or Scott Gescheider for water-wise irrigation and expert assistance. (825-0602, est. 5).

To learn more about the WaterSense program and tips for your home/yard, visit www.epa.gov/watersense/tips/cons.htm

WATERWISE TIPS

  • Detect and repair all leaks in your irrigation system.
  • Water the lawn or garden during the coolest part of the day (early morning is best). Do not water on windy days unless it’s by drip.
  • Water trees and shrubs, which have deep root systems, longer and less frequently than shallow-rooted plants that require smaller amounts of water more often.
  • Set sprinklers to water the lawn or garden only – not the street or sidewalk - to avoid runoff.

Seminar Schedule

All Seminars are on Saturday at 10 AM at the Moana Lane store.

  • June 30th – Living with Fire
Ed Smith, UNR Cooperative Extension natural resource specialist, will discuss local wildfire behavior, the wildfire threat to homes, and landscape design recommendations aimed at reducing the wildfire threat.

Featured Recipe: American Flag Cake

What You'll Need:

  • 1 yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon light corn syrup
  • 1 tablespoon soft butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pint fresh strawberries, washed and dried
  • 1/2 cup fresh blueberries, washed and dried

Step by Step:

Mix cake mix with water, oil, and eggs according to package directions. Pour batter into a 9" x 13" baking pan.

Bake in a 350° F. oven for approximately 30 minutes or until the cake pulls away from the edges and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool on a wire rack for five minutes. Remove cake from pan and allow to cool completely.

For frosting: mix powdered sugar, water, corn syrup, vanilla, and butter together until thick and creamy. When cake is cool, frost the entire cake with the frosting.

Slice strawberries in half length wise and allow them to drain on a paper towels while you arrange the blueberries. Lay the fruit out on the cake into a flag pattern as shown.
