Products For Successful Tree Planting

The Sharper Edge

Kelloggs Gromulch – a combination soil amendment/mulch which provides rich organic material that trees and shrubs need to get established
SuperThrive – to encourage new roots and reduce plant shock.
Osmocote – Continuous release fertilizer feeds trees over time.
Koala Tree Strap – easy to use, flexible tree ties secure new tree to stakes without damaging the tree trunk.
Tree Stakes – for those windy areas where staking is required. Use two opposing flexible ties. Remove both stakes and straps after the first year; they will do great harm to the tree if left in too long.

Now is the time to...

1. Shop for garden accessories and outdoor living.
Moana recommends:

  • Beautiful and unique wind chimes.
  • New arrivals from Smith & Hawken, featuring the Marlowe Collection.
  • 'Not Neutral' garden design collection features great items to give your outdoor space a boost! Garden lanterns and plant stakes.

2. Plant Plant water-wise trees (see article on Planting Success in the hot summer)
Moana recommends:

  • Hackberry
  • Golden Rain Tree
  • Autumn Purple Ash
trees

Other things to do in the garden:

  1. Check the drip lines to your trees to ensure they are getting adequate water where the bulk of their roots are located. As trees grow, their roots move further from their trunks, so it's important that emitters are moved and accurately sized to distribute adequate water to the roots. This needs to be done every year.
  2. Add 3-4 inches of organic mulch around all trees after they've been well-watered.
  3. Remove tree stakes, straps and wires from any tree that has been in the ground for over a year.
