GARDEN TIPS FOR MAY/JUNE

LANDSCAPE PLANTS. All evergreens, perennials, roses, shrubs, trees, and vines can go into the ground now.

SUMMER BULBS. When the soil warms up, plant cannas, dahlias, gladiolus, and tuberous begonias.

DIVIDE SPRING BULBS. After the leaves turn brown, dig up crowded clumps of daffodils, tulips, and other spring bulbs and gently pull the bulbs apart. Before replanting, till 2 inches of compost and a handful of complete fertilizer into the soil.

FERTILIZE. After bloom, feed spring-flowering shrubs and start a monthly fertilizing program for long-blooming annuals, perennials, and container plants. Fertilize bluegrass lawns by midmonth. Feed roses this month, then once a month through mid-August.

PROTECT ANNUALS AND VEGETABLES. To protect newly transplanted annuals and vegetables from frost, cover them with floating row covers on cold nights.

SUPPORT PERENNIALS. When tall perennials, such as aster, delphinium, peony, and Shasta daisy, reach about 8 to 12 inches high, stake plants or place hoop supports over them.

FEED LAWNS. With a high-nitrogen fertilizer; repeat the process in 4-6 weeks.

PRUNE. Finish pruning roses. Prune spring-flowering shrubs, such as forsythia, quince, and lilacs after bloom. Remove dead, diseased, or injured branches wherever you find them.

APHIDS. Depending on the severity of the infestation blast them off with a strong spray of water, or spray with insecticidal soap.

BACK TO BASICS

Summer lawn watering. To irrigate effectively with an underground system, you need to know how evenly your sprinklers deliver water. Check your system by placing a number of equal-size cans around the lawn, at regular intervals outward from the sprinklers. Turn on the water for 15 minutes, then turn it off and measure the amount of water in each can. If the containers fill unevenly, check sprinkler heads; they may need adjusting or replacing.

PLANT OF THE MONTH

Daylily (Hemerocallis)

Daylilies are some of the easiest of all perennial flowers to grow. Most daylilies bloom best in full sun, but will tolerate some shade in our area. At least 6 hours daily of sunlight is recommended. Although daylilies can grow in almost any soil, it is best to grow them with a good quantity of organic matter to retain moisture. They do best with good drainage. Daylilies are remarkably drought tolerant, but do best when supplied with frequent watering. Feed lightly in spring and after peak blooming. During blooming season, "deadhead" spent blooms. Some of the more popular varieties that we grow are Stella D’oro (yellow), Bonanza (orange/yellow), Summer Wine, Hall’s Pink, Autumn Red. Why not try Daylilies your garden?

NOTES FROM THE EDITOR:

Last week I was walking through the yard when I spotted one of the most spectacular Rhododendron I had seen this year. Since I was looking to replace one in my own garden it caught my attention. After some careful research, actually my research consists of speaking with the knowledge salespeople, who sell these plants everyday. I found out that my lovely ‘Rhodie’ was, in fact, from Moana’s own growing grounds in Oregon, hence a beautiful plant with a Great price. My new shrub makes for a great colorful backdrop in my garden. Happy Gardening until next time.
